For nearly an hour, 52-year-old Chartered Accountant Manoj Mehta, a Juhu resident, was stuck under the debris. He was waiting on platform no. 8 for the 7.38 a.m. train to Dahanu when the bridge collapsed.

His younger brother Rajesh said, “After he was pulled out, he got the fire brigade official to call me.” The siblings run a construction business in Palghar. While Mr. Mehta takes the early morning train, Rajesh takes a passenger train at 9.40 a.m. “This has been our routine for years,” he said.

His family shifted him to Nanavati Hospital, where he underwent emergency spinal surgery. “Doctors said he has no sensation in his lower limbs. Otherwise, he is stable and has been conscious throughout,” Mr. Mehta’s wife Sonal said.

Rajesh added, “He said no one came to help as there were live wires in the debris. By the time the fire brigade pulled him out, one hour had passed.” Mr. Mehta has injuries to his hands, legs, and ribs as well.
